On Privacy for Politicians: Teenage Pregnancy and the Vice Presidency
When a politician runs on a specific agenda such as family values, anti-abortion and the like, which are very personal and private issues for the electorate; is it ethical if not "fair" for them to request privacy when their personal conduct goes against their very own agendas? To make it simpler, now that we know that Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin's daughter is 5 months pregnant at 17 (and on her way to marriage), would it be fair for the media and the electorate to gauge Palin's virtues as a candidate based on her success with the family values and standards she and the Republicans claim to espouse? "Family values and character" have long been the battle cry of many Republicans, especially during the Clinton years. How will the Republicans adjust their platform based on the realities of the family of their Vice Presidential candidate? (These realities are of course present across party lines. It's just that as far as I can recall many Republicans have always claimed so called "moral high ground" when it comes to situations like teenage pregnancy--that somehow when we elect Republicans, our families will be of "higher moral standing." Certainly under those standards, teenage pregnancy would not rank so high.)
Full statement from Sarah and Todd Palin:
"We have been blessed with five wonderful children who we love with all our heart and mean everything to us. Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. We’re proud of Bristol’s decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support.
"Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family. We ask the media to respect our daughter and Levi’s privacy as has always been the tradition of children of candidates."
